Aircraft of the Week: Diamond DA40

The Diamond DA40 is a modern single engine aircraft designed and manufactured by Diamond Aircraft Industries,an Austrian aircraft manufacturer. The DA40 was built as a successor to the popular DA20. First flown in 1997, its features include four seats, a low wing, a T-tail, and a fixed tricycle style landing gear, however the most impressive feature of the DA40 is the Garmin G1000 glass cockpit.

The Garmin G1000 glass cockpit is an integrated flight instrument system consisting of a primary flight display and a multi-function display replacing traditional avionics and instrument controls. In addition to the displays is a communications panel which generally is located between the two screens.

The Primary Flight Display consists of the following:

  • Airspeed indicator
  • Altimeter
  • Heading indicator
  • Deviation indicator
  • Map
  • Transponder controls


The PFD  can also be used the same way as the Multi-Function Display in case of MFD failures.
